If는 여러 가지로 쓰이지만 그중 Whether과 비슷하게 쓰일 때 헷갈려하시는 분들이 많아 이 부분을 한번 살펴보려고 합니다.
If와 Whether 은 모두 조건문이나 불확실성을 표현
e.g. Call bakeries around town and find out if any of them sell blueberry muffins.

The board discussed whether it should be mailed.
이사회는 이걸 우편으로 보내야 할지 논의했다.
Tom이 정말 그 가게에 갔는지 아닌지 알아보기 위해 그에게 전화했습니다.
I called Tom to find out whether or not he really did go to the store.
I called Tom to find out whether he really did go to the store or not.
I called Tom to find out if he really did go to the store or not.
*whether 은 or not 을 바로 뒤에 쓸 수도 문장 맨 뒤에 쓸 수도 있지만,
if는 or not을 문장 맨 뒤에만 쓸 수 있습니다.
Whether
Whether은 두 가지 가능한 옵션이나 결과를 강조하기 위해 사용되고, 선택이나 불확실성을 표현할 때 쓰입니다.
e.g. I'm not sure whether it will rain tomorrow.
내일 비가올지 확실하지 않다
I don't know whether I should go to the party or stay at home.
파티에 가야할지 아니면 집에 있어야 할지 잘 모르겠다.
If
If는 특정 조건 하에서 어떤 일이 발생하거나 사실일 것임을 나타내는 조건문을 말하는 데 사용됩니다.
e.g. If it rains, we will cancel the picnic.
비가오면 소풍을 취소합니다.
If you arrive early, you might get a good seat.
일찍 도착한다면, 아마 좋은 자리를 얻을 수 있을 거야
Whether 만되고 if는 안 되는 경우
전치사 to 앞에는 whether 만 가능합니다.
e.g. I don't know whether to buy the yellow one or the green one.
노란색을 사야 할지 초록색을 사야할지 모르겠다
I don't know if to buy the yellow one or the green one. (x)
I don't know if I should buy the yellow one or the green one. (o)
if는 or not을 바로 이어 붙여 쓸 수 없습니다.
Can you tell me whether or not you're interested in the job?
당신이 그 일에 관심이 있는지 없는지 말씀해 주시겠어요?
Can you tell me if or not you're interested in the job? (x)
Can you tell me if you're interested in the job or not? (o)
전치사 뒤에는 whether 만 가능합니다.
Later I argued with the doctor about whether I had hit my head since I couldn't remember feeling it.
기억이 나질 않아서 머리를 부딪혔는지 여부에 대해 나중에 의사와 논쟁을 벌였다.
